I’m a farmer market farming in Philly. I don’t think you can change the perspective of the upper class, consumer from my experience. They’re too stubborn and stuck up to change their life because their consumption pleasures them way too much. It’s not stopping me from trying but every Sunday when I come home from Market, I feel very discouraged by how unaware everyone is.

ALWAYS properly greet someone - especially if they’re older. And what makes me cringe is when I hear younger vendors say “How are you guys doing?” to older ladies. They’re ladies, not guys. I also finish with “thank you ma’am” or “sir” depending on the case. And if they buy nothing, I still thank them for coming to the market.

A couple of years ago I got burnt out on selling at the local market so I made a deal with a friend that if she'd take my produce to market I'd split the proceeds 50/50 with her. I ended up making MORE money because she was such a better salesperson than me she more than doubled my sales! As you say, old grumpy farmer versus pleasant young worman, don't underestimate the difference.

"Collaboration is about working with people who are very different who see the world very differently from you" Sorry, I don't want to be collaborating with people who have a very different world view than me. Why would I want to? I want to collaborate with people who share my world view. The statements made are part of this ongoing globalization push by the left centered on no borders mass immigration that is destroying the west. The left hate right-wingers and say so every chance they get an d would never collaborate with them. Such hypocrisy.

The problem is with logistics. They build GMO crops for longer shelf-life with tougher skins to be able to sell long after the nutrient is absent. It's all for profit. There should be a limited on miles of per every organic crop. However, this might exclude certain crops in certain areas. But, allowing endless miles must end. Spraying Organic crops is insane because they are shipped on wooden pallets. Implement Veg reusable Pallets that are not infected with harmful insects. Yes, it would cost most, but sobeit. Health should be most important, screw profits. Pay the farmers what they are worth and reward them for healthy veg.

I'm trying to find out something. Lets say i am supposed to plant lettuce on April 15th but i am behind a week or two due to weather, will just that crop move (tending and harvest date) or will the whole bed move? (The next planting and such.) Its my one issue with seedtime. Beds are overlapping due to late plantings and that gets confusing.

As I am concerned, an healthy soil has the right balance between the quantity of microorganisms and the food in and on the soil so adding compost tea will not really improve the soil fertility. However the compost tea might be useful when sprayed on plants to increase their biome and their immune system. This would be like a prevention action but an healthy plant does not really need it. Besides a compost tea is too much work for a lazy gardener like me.

I would only finance if you're already having success on small scale. You better be able to plant grow harvest sell, do book keeping... financing is a risk. I think one of the best ways if a person can manage it is maintain a day job while you dip your toe into the ide of growing foods to sell. You may find there's not a market in your area for what you want to sell.. you may find you suck at farming and need to practice.. I'd probably use a day job to build up capitalto get started before jumping in feet first...

Love your book and I enjoy your videos. But I do think these numbers vary GREATLY from region to region. I live in Belgium (Europe) where the cost of labor is wildly expensive. For us, I think probably half of your revenue will be labor cost, then another 25% for operational cost at least. However, 150k/acre (Canadian dollars I presume) translates to about 250k euro per hectare. This, I think, is unheard of for any farm in western europe, whether they are organic, conventional, CSA, or otherwise... I would be very interested to converse with other farmers from Europe who have reached these numbers indeed. Cheers!
